As a piano instructor, my philosophy is to provide a well-rounded music education to every student, regardless of age, ability or background. Students who embrace a positive attitude and work intelligently can learn, grow as musicians, and improve their skills at the piano. Students will be able to achieve short and long term goals with a determined effort in lessons and regular practice, provided I embrace the following principles:

  • Every student is important to me. Regardless of age, ability, or background I will treat my students with sincere respect and empathy, always preserving their dignity to the best of my ability.

  • I will be passionate about music making and inspire motivation through the joy of experiencing music.

  • I will select methods that best complement the students’ style of learning and temperament.

  • I will foster a safe and fun learning environment where students will be free to explore, discover, and learn.

  • I will come to each lesson prepared with varying learning strategies and activities in order that each lesson will be interesting, engaging, and inspiring.

  • I will educate parents of young students in order that they may help their child practice at home. I will stress the importance of parental guidance and support of music making as well as setting up a practice environment conducive to learning in the home.

  • I will set each student up for success in every lesson and in regard to short and long term goals.

  • I will adequately prepare students for competition and performance opportunities.

  • I will provide each student with a well-rounded music education with emphasis in reading skills, music theory, music history, improvisation and creative thinking activities, memorization, musicianship skills, and performance practice.

  • I will set high but realistic expectations, encouraging my students to develop a sense of achievement as well as music appreciation.

  • I will communicate with every student and parent on a regular basis about the students’ goals and progress.

  • I will encourage each student to think and learn independently.

  • I will operate with a high level of professionalism. I will participate in continuing education activities and pedagogy conferences to ensure a high level of instruction for all students.

  • I will continue to read and think about teaching as well as perform on a regular basis.
